In connection with BIM, the contributions often speak of the digital twin. The digital twin is the ideal state we want to achieve. In detail, I could write a whole book about the current technological digital state. For me, however, my article is only about the fundamental question of whether the digital twin is currently still utopia or already lived reality. I’ll start my post with a quote from Wikipedia: A digital twin is a virtual representation that serves as the real-time digital counterpart of a physical object or process. Digital twins are the result of continual improvement in the creation of product design and engineering activities. Product drawings and engineering specifications progressed from handmade drafting to computer aided drafting/computer aided design to model-based systems engineering. The digital twin of a physical object is dependent on the digital thread—the lowest level design and specification for a digital twin—and the „twin“ is dependent on the digital thread to maintain accuracy. Sometimes we hope to find the answer to the question by looking into a glass sphere. It would be nice if it were so simple. Unfortunately, it is not. I do not really have to report on the BIM methodology itself. Germany is a digitally backward country. There are many nations around the world that are already further than us with digitalization. I only publish my articles on social networks in communities that deal with digitalization in the construction industry. BIM has been discussed in the communities for several years. The German users are divided into different groups. There are the BIM professionals, BIM beginners with project experience, the users who are still in the thought phase and the non-users. BIM haters are rare. The non-users have made their decision. You do not want to work with BIM for various reasons. I cannot say how big each group is. I am pretty sure of one. The real BIM professionals are a minority. Germany is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises. A typical medium-sized company participates in regional construction projects. Manchmal erhoffen wir uns mit einem Blick in eine Glaskugel die Antwort auf die Frage zu finden. Es wäre schön, wenn es so einfach wäre. Das ist es leider nicht. Über die BIM-Methodik selbst muss ich eigentlich nicht berichten. Deutschland ist ein digital rückständiges Land. Es gibt viele Nationen weltweit, die mit der Digitalisierung schon weiter sind als wir. Meine Artikel in den sozialen Netzwerken veröffentlich ich nur in Communities, die sich mit der Digitalisierung in der Bauindustrie auseinandersetzen. In den Communities wird bereits seit einigen Jahren über BIM diskutiert. Die deutschen Anwender teilen sich in unterschiedliche Gruppen auf. Es gibt die BIM-Profis, BIM-Einsteiger mit Projekterfahrung, die Anwender, die immer noch in der Überlegungsphase sind und die Nichtanwender. BIM-Hasser sind eher selten. Die Nichtanwender haben ihre Entscheidung getroffen. Sie wollen aus unterschiedlichen Gründen nicht mit BIM arbeiten. Ich kann keine Aussage darüber treffen, wie groß die einzelnen Gruppen sind. Bei einem bin ich mir ziemlich sicher. Die echten BIM-Profis sind eine Minderheit. Deutschland ist geprägt vom Mittelstand. Ein typisches mittelständiges Unternehmen nimmt an regionalen Bauprojekten teil. Die Mehrzahl der Architekten arbeitet in der Regel immer mit den gleichen Unternehmen erfolgreich über Jahre zusammen.
